General descriptionFirst published in 1973, the Great Griffith Gazette was our University's original staff newsletter. The Gazette was the brainchild of our foundation Landscape Architect Neil Thyer and our foundation Curator of Grounds, Colin Phillips. The newsletter was inspired by the fact that when our University first started operations at Nathan campus, the buildings and staff were quite spread out. Neil and Colin decided to start the Great Griffith Gazette as a way of improving communication and camaraderie among our early employees.
Neil and Colin were under no editorial or formal direction from our senior management on how they went about publishing the Gazette. They very much were in control of the content, layout, and frequency of publication. However, in Neil's own words, "publishing the Gazette became a beast" and the editors found themselves with not enough time to do their actual jobs. Despite handing over responsibility for producing the publication, the Great Griffith Gazette ceased being printed in 1981 due to a lack of staff resources and continually increasing printing costs.
Digitised copies (in chronological order) - are available for viewing below. There is some inconsistency with the original 'volume' and 'number' details that were issued. Additionally, there may be some original issues not included in the digitised list below as the Archive does not hold a copy at this time. Any missing issues will be added to the list below as they become available.
Note: As the publication was a product of its time in the 1970s and 1980s, some of the historical content produced in these editions would be considered offensive by current standards. The editions are made available with this context in mind and are not intended to cause any offence. Scope and contentThis is believed to be a complete run of this titled publication.
