I have many fond, and some sad, memories of being an inaugural student studying science at the Nathan campus commencing in 1975 and 1976. Fresh out of school, the university's brand new common areas gave students the relaxing places we needed socialize. I still remember students carrying around acoustic guitars playing the latest Pick Floyd song "Wish you were here", amongst others.
I remember attending the opening ceremony 50 years ago. Unfortunately I can't see any photos of me in the many photos displayed on the 50th anniversary website. I'd be interested to earn if there was an attendance record kept.
The sad memories relate to a brilliant fellow science student who became a good friend before he was killed in a car crash. I've never forgotten his name, Shane Alroy.
One special and curiously lonely memory for me was being among the first students in 1975 - I actually never saw anyone else - to use the sole APRANET computer terminal on the campus for student use. I remember having to pay $15 for access. Compared to todays internet experience, it was underwhelming because it was strictly a character based interaction and I had no-one I could converse with via Electronic Mail, later becoming known as eMail.
I would like to attend the 50th anniversary celebrations at the Nathan campus to possibly reconnect with past students.
