Why Does Your Face Look Weird When You Get Angry?

General descriptionThis is the anger face. It's hardwired into the human brain. Congenitally blind children will make this face without ever having seen it. And it's substantially different from expressions made by chimpanzees. Now that means it probably evolved sometime in the last few million years. The anger face evolved to intimidate our rivals by making us look physically stronger. The seven major components of the anger face, the lowered brow, the widened nose, the raised cheekbone, thin lips, each by themselves makes the person look physically stronger. For example, if you take a person and thin their lips or raise their mouth, it's not enough to make them look angry, but it does make them look physically stronger. The anger face is a constellation of these muscle movements that gives the illusion that you're tougher than you actually are. Now, our ancestors that didn't pull the right combination of muscles to make this face failed to intimidate their rivals.
