General descriptionSince the turn of the century, tragic events like 9/11, terrorist attacks, conflicts, and political violence across the Middle East have been overwhelming. Western nations have had to confront a steep learning curve in respect to Islam and the Muslim world. This challenge has been made more difficult by media coverage that is often sensational, lacking in context, and overlooks the diversity of Muslim people. Muslims comprise almost one quarter of the world's population and 60% of the world's Muslims live in the Asia-Pacific region. Indonesia is one of Australia's closest neighbours and is the world's most populous Muslim nation. Understanding Islam and Muslim people, cultures and societies is one of the Western world's great challenges this century.
