What Blinking Has To Do With Cartoons

General descriptionEvery day we blink about 28,000 times, but we don't notice it because the world doesn't turn black every time we do. That's because an after image of what we're looking at stays burned on our retinas just long enough for a blink so what we see is one continuous image. This phenomenon is known as persistence of vision. It's handy for blinking and it's great for movies and animation. It's how lots of individual pictures flashed on screen with a gap in between appear to be one continuous piece of footage. And if something changes position slightly in each of those pictures, our brain will automatically fill in the gaps as one continuous, seamless movement. This is known as the fire phenomenon. And without both of these, there would be no cartoons or movies. Take me for example, I'm just a thousand different photographs flashed at just the right speed.
