Responding to industrialism, the movement celebrated traditional creative practices and its founders believed in the power of arts and crafts to change people's lives. At the time, this was just an idea, but today there is growing evidence to show that art and craft activities really do have positive health impacts. Knitting, for example, can have a calming effect and reduce stress-related disease. It can also slow cognitive decline, increase happiness and enhance self-esteem. It's believed that this is because knitting, like other art and craft activities, requires us to use several areas of the brain together, including visual perception, motor control, memory and concentration. This can help us feel calmer and more focused.
