How Computers Can Help Cure Disease

General descriptionThe last 20 years has seen an explosive growth in the speed and power of computers. At Griffith University's Eskitis Institute, we are trying to harness this power to help cure some of the world's most devastating diseases. Studies have shown that neurodegenerative disorders, like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, have a significant impact on neuronal structure and morphology, the size and shape of a cell. We can use modern microscopes to study neural morphology, producing huge amounts of high resolution data. The trouble is this takes a very long time to analyse, but powerful modern computers can allow us to extract the relevant information much faster. Where previously it could take a biologist weeks or even months to analyse, they can now do it in a matter of hours.
