How Architecture Helped Cure Polio

General descriptionIn the 1950s, Jonas Salk created the world's first successful inactivated polio vaccine, saving hundreds of thousands of lives around the world. But the vaccine didn't come easily to Salk, and it wasn't until he left his cramped basement laboratory and went to stay in a monastery in Assisi that he had any real success. It wasn't just the peace and quiet of the monastery that helped Salk. Studies have shown that the high ceilings, views of nature and the colour green significantly improve our creativity, concentration and memory. The open space and views of the calm rolling hills provided the ideal mental conditions to activate Salk's creativity and help him make the intellectual leap that he needed. So if you're struggling to think outside the box, check your surroundings.
