Do Genes Have a Memory?

General descriptionWe generally think of our genes as being a fixed set of instructions, like a recipe book, that's inherited from generation to generation relatively unchanged. However, while the actual sequence of our genes tends to be inherited this way, certain environmental conditions, such as under or over nutrition, can modify our DNA by adding or removing chemical tags that control whether certain genes are turned on or off. We call this epigenetics or above the genome. We see the impact of this in women who were pregnant during periods of famine. Studies have shown that their children and their grandchildren born into a period of relative food abundance often experience poor health in
adulthood. This is because their epigenetic chemical tags have been altered, suggesting a genetic memory passed from not only one but two
