Can Koalas Learn New Tricks?

General descriptionKoalas are in deep trouble. Wherever they live near large numbers of people, they are succumbing to disease, dogs, and unavoidably roads. Humans have crisscrossed the landscape with pathways for cars, making it increasingly difficult for koalas to move about safely. There are many reasons for these journeys. Better leaves, seeking a mate, escaping danger,
but crossing a road is always dangerous. Sure, we could just fence them in, but it's important that koalas can move about freely. One solution is to help them to cross roads beneath the traffic. Culverts, structures that allow water to flow under roads, are everywhere. If we constructed a simple platform through these tunnels, would the koalas use them? The sceptic said they wouldn't. Others said they simply weren't that smart. We decided to let the koalas make the call. Within three weeks, they were crossing roads regularly and safely. Underground marsupials?
