Amalgamation with Queensland Conservatorium of Music

DESCRIPTION

DescriptionIn 1988, the Australian Government introduced sweeping changes to our national tertiary education system. The 'Unified National System' was introduced, and this new model was intended to provide a higher standard of tertiary education and reduce inefficiencies in the existing structure. To some extent, this new structure was concerned with how many full-time students an individual institution had or should have. Student numbers in turn determined the funding amount for each individual tertiary body under the Unified National System.

This funding model imposed a requirement on Colleges of Advanced Education and similar college institutions around Australia to either morph into an individual university or amalgamate with existing universities. As a result, the Mount Gravatt and Gold Coast Colleges of Advanced Education become campuses of Griffith University in 1990. The Queensland Conservatorium of Music continued these forced mergers by becoming an official part of the University in 1991. Originally established in 1957, the new entity became known as Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.
