Award of Doctor of the Griffith University

DESCRIPTION

Alternative titleDoctor of the UniversityDescriptionOur Doctor of the University (honorary doctorate) has been awarded since our first year of teaching in 1975. This award originally was offered by Griffith to individuals that the Honorary Degree Committee (which includes the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor) believe have made outstanding contributions to society or "rendered distinguished service to the community". Today, after an individual is nominated for the award, a number of internal administrative processes are undertaken, before the nomination is passed to our University Council for final approval.

Recipients of this award have provided significant service for society in areas such as sport, politics, arts, philanthropy and conservation. This Doctorate has traditionally been presented at Griffith University graduation ceremonies. In 1977, the Griffith Council resolved to change the name of the degree from Doctor of the Griffith University to Doctor of the University.

Awardees of our Doctor of the University include First Australians Neville Bonner (politics) and Evonne Goolagong Cawley (tennis), Kate Miller-Heidke (music), Barry Humphries (actor/author), and Katharine, Duchess of Kent (charity). Our first honorary doctorate was awarded to Sir Colin Hannah, former Governor of Queensland.
