General description
An increasing number of women are turning to multivitamins to support their nutritional health prior to and throughout pregnancy. Recent research both at Griffith University and internationally has revealed that taking multivitamins in the first trimester of pregnancy can reduce the risk of complications such as preeclampsia and preterm delivery. Multivitamins contain a range of vitamins and minerals important to human health. In our work at Griffith, we are particularly interested in the mineral selenium, which helps to supercharge our body's antioxidant proteins and is known to have benefits during pregnancy as well as for your heart, brain and immune system. With our lives getting busier every day, we can't always eat a balanced diet. So for women considering pregnancy, taking multivitamins could provide a convenient way to give their baby the best start to life.
