The very first University student residence opened in February of 1980. East Residence (now called Bellenden Ker) at Nathan campus provided Griffith with an initial source of badly needed on-campus student accommodation. This initial stage of living quarters marked the beginning of the accommodation precinct, which would become known as The Village, and then Toohey Village.
