Professor Davis rose through the ranks at Griffith, commencing with the University in 1985 as a lecturer in Public Policy. As Vice Chancellor, he immediately began to reinvent Griffith with a major rebranding of the organisation and a range of expansion initiatives designed to increase the University's profile.
