With the retirement of long-serving Griffith Council member and Chancellor, Sir Allan Sewell, the way was paved for The Honourable John Macrossan AC to become Chancellor of Griffith University. Judge Macrossan had served as Deputy Chancellor since 1985 and on the Griffith Council since 1983.​
